So back in February my girlfriend, a few friends and I decided to make a 4 hour trip out to an abandoned insane asylum. This was our first abandoned exploration so we were anxious and nervous about getting caught. The place was huge and you could easily spend an entire day out there. At the time we did not realize that there was security patroling the property on an hourly basis.
We arrived sometime in the afternoon and slipped into the window of one of the main buildings undetected. We had to go behind a Home Depot and through a field to get to it. It wasn't till we were on the third or fourth floor that we spotted a white SUV parked in the front of the main building, with three people standing around it. We were not sure if they were fellow explorer's like us or security, but we were not taking any chances. So we kept our heads low and tried to stay alert and quiet.
As we were leaving the building to go across the street to the rehabilitation center, my girlfriend spotted the white SUV coming down the road to our left. So we stopped and got down as low as we could in hopes of them not seeing us. Luckily for us, we were in a spot that was covered in some light brush so they did not see us. I kept an eye on them till they were out of site and we got back up and started moving again. About a few more feet closer to the road to cross, I saw the vehicle coming back our way. I was positive that they had spotted us this time and we got low and started moving back to some more brush. Somehow they did not see us and they drove by. We were all getting pretty nervous and moved as quickly as we could to the rehabilitation center.
Along the way we could see foot prints in the snow, so obviously we were not the only ones on the property. Finally we made it in and the building was incredible. It was covered in some really impressive graffiti on almost every wall of the building. The place featured an indoor bowling alley and a swimming pool. We walked around trying to take it all in and get as many pictures as we could.
We eventually left the rehabilitation center and made our way to a large steel building. We saw tire tracks and foot prints in the snow as were were making our way to an entrance. Once we made it in we explored a few of the floors saw a bunch of abandoned equipment, a safe, and some really old chairs. We got a few more pics and saw that white SUV show up again on one of the streets. That was when we decided to start heading back.
We made our way down the the first floor of the building into a stairwell. There was this door propped open so we could get outside. However, we were not sure where we were in relation to our car. So my girlfriend pulled out her phone and checked the map. From where we were we could only see in front of us. To the left and right of us were two large wings of the building blocking our view and in front of us was a street. We knew for sure that the SUV was to the right of us, but were not sure if they were watching the road. As we were discussing what to do (if we should cross the street or trace our steps back the way we came) we heard this loud noise one floor below us and right down the hall from where we were. It sounded like metal getting kicked across the floor. So we bolted out the door and crossed the street as fast as we could.
We made it. We were in the building we started out in. Finally we made it back to the window and quickly climbed out. We were close, and just as were about to start running across the field, my girlfriend spotted the white SUV to our immediate left. It was close, probably about 25 or 30 yards. So we doubled back to the side of the building and ran into the woods going back to the main road where Home Depot was off of. There was a small hill and a creek that we stopped at to pack up our things and remove our gloves and dust masks. Once we were less suspicious, we climbed up a small hill and hopped a barrier in front of the small gate that blocked the property off.
Once we were in the clear, all we had to do was cross the parking lot and get back to our car. We made it and I got some nice pictures. It was well worth the risk, and a lot of fun.
